Toilets and schools too far from Rongai inconveniencing residents

News

Tiolets in Rongai

The sight of people peeing on walls or deserted paths is not uncommon in Ongata Rongai, after all, clean public toilets are unheard of here.

For instance, traders in Kware and Soko Mjinga markets have to make do with a few private lavatories in pathetic conditions that charge Sh5 - only those who are hard pressed and have to go use these latrines.

Ongata Rongai ward representative Mwathi Pere told The Nairobian that Soko Mjinga traders should not complain as plans are underway to put up a toilet and other facilities in Kware market.

“Money has already been allocated for the market and other facilities. We are done with the budget for these projects and only await the government to commission the work. For now, we cannot promise anything beyond that,” said the rep.

Toilets aside, the township has no public playgrounds or recreation parks. Rongai has only three public schools, two of which are village schools catering for indigenous residents.

Many parents in the area are therefore forced to enroll their children in private schools which charge as much as Sh40,000 per term. Some have no option but to register their children in public schools in Karen or Lang’ata.

These children commute to school daily, leaving the warmth of their homes as early as 5am, with some getting back home after dark in the evening.
