Three people killed after a mosque under construction collapsed in Pate Island

Lamu, Kenya: Three people were Wednesday morning killed and seven others wounded after a mosque under construction collapsed in Pate Island, Lamu County.

Police said the victims were workers at the mosque. Local county commissioner Njenga Miiri said they were called and informed of the incident before they sent boats to rescue the injured.

Pate is one of the islands in Lamu county. Police said the rescue mission took long because the island is deep within the Indian Ocean from the mainland where the boats were responding.

“We have sent a boat to check on the situation but we are informed there at three deaths so far,” said Miiri.
