Nyeri court acquits youth accused of theft

A young man who had been accused of breaking into a beauty shop in Nyeri town and stealing goods worth Sh88,960 on Christmas eve of 2011, has been acquitted of theft charges.

Dickson Wambugu was freed by Nyeri Resident Magistrate John Aringo who said in his ruling that the case was "lazily investigated and executed".

"The fact that the allegedly stolen items were not produced in court as exhibits is on its own fatal to the case. Furthermore, neither the caretaker who reported the theft was called to testify nor was the investigating officer cross-examined," Aringo said.

Wambugu, who was arrested at Ruring'u village in Nyeri, on January 1, 2012, had denied the charges and claimed to have been coerced into signing a false statement by police.
