Gor Mahia’s chance to top table when they play Ulinzi

Gor Mahia vs Ulinzi Stars

When Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia take on Ulinzi Stars on Wednesday at City Stadium, there will be only one thing on their minds: to get back to the top of the log.
Gor Mahia’s options are fast running out, now that the title chase seems to have been narrowed down to four teams. For this reason, they cannot afford to drop any more points at this stage in the competition.
Three weeks ago, the KPL champions were still at the top of the standings despite having played three matches less than their fellow title contenders.
But after having played two of the fixtures, they picked only two points out of a possible six and now find themselves second on the spot, which means the advantage they had, was just on paper.
Wednesday’s match against Ulinzi Stars is the last advantage they have because after it, they will be at par with their other title contenders in terms of the number of matches played.
The only exception here is Sofapaka, who have played 24 matches. But as Gor Mahia has already realised, having a match in hand counts for nothing. It is only the points you have at hand that matter.
With this in mind, they must raise their game against Ulinzi Stars, who are even under more pressure after they went down by a solitary goal to KCB last Friday.
One man who must be feeling the pressure is Gor Mahia’s coach Frank Nuttall. It is unclear if fans will still be willing to give him more time without a win after Wednesday.
On Friday, troubled KRA host Sony Sugar at Ruaraka Stadium with an eye on finishing in the top eight position.
Four losses in a row has left the tax men dismayed after a good start in the season, but have a chance to recover.
KRA coach Ken Kenyatta must now lower his expectations and focus on a top eight finish, which will still be a good place considering that this is their first season in the top league.
Tusker will host City Stars at Ruaraka Stadium on Friday with an eye to the top of the log.
