Senator Sonko's precious gem unveiled

Features

Saumu Mbuvi

"My dad has been sensitive about me appearing in the media lately as a section of print media exposed me negatively, something that could have put public my image and that of my father in problems," the rather cheerful Saumu intervenes.

She is cautious and a bit shy about taking another interview only a week after a tabloid exposed her negatively.

We push on. She relaxes. "I think the president called my dad and the two had a little discussion about the story.

But I explained to my dad, who is very understanding, and I guess all is well now.

I just don't want guys to misquote me or reflect me in negative light," the trendy lady leads on and settles down for the interview, her honest responses betraying her character - pride and self-belief.

She is soft spoken but don't be fooled, the Jomo Kenyatta University (Karen Campus) student is full of wit and just like her dad, she seems to have an answer for even the most controversial question on issues surrounding her father's political and private life.

"The best thing about being Sonko's daughter is not just about the money and the luxury.

It's the fatherly love we all get from him. He has a warm heart, he understands, is generous, loving, and very funny.

He is my motivator and my advisor. I just love everything about him," the gorgeous Saumu, who refers to herself as Sonkolet, beams with a convincing 'affluent' queen's language accent.

In quick succession, she adds: "Most rich people are not satisfied with what they have thus we are also out there paper chasing.

We have all been raised up under good discipline, that of hard-working upright-living and humble children.

" Saumu loves being Sonko's daughter because the Nairobi City boss dad devotes most of his time to her and her sisters as well as the entire family.

To him, they come first. "I don't walk in everywhere, posing as Sonko's daughter to take advantage of the privileges I would get by saying I am the Senator's daughter.

However, there are, of course, situations where I use my dad's name to get certain breakthrough," jokingly, she reveals with a little smile on her face.

"Many people expect me to be a spoiled brat simply because my father is rich and liberal. But I am a girl of great morals and I am cautious about everything I do and everywhere I go, as well as how I interact with people," she remarks.

During this interview, Saumu reveals that her monthly allowance from her dad is more than some people's salary as she is entitled to Sh60,000 every month, which she normally uses to shop and party and at the same time treat friends as she is quite the party freak.

Other than the enviable allowance, she was gifted with a convertible classy ride worth Sh2 million by her dad about a year ago, a little toy she uses during her weekend outings.

Hers has been a life coated with leisure and pleasure thanks to her travelling hobby that has seen her visit a number of tourism destinations around the world such as London, Turkey, Dubai, South Africa, India and China, just to name a few.

"People admire me for who I am and I don't just want to be seen as that Sonko's daughter who rides on his fame.

I have been a fashion model for a period of time and my fashion sense influences a lot of people and for that matter, I want to be a role model and a mentor to young girls," she notes.

"I would like to be famous or popular for that matter for the right reasons. Some young girls are becoming public names by using nudity as their claim to fame and that is just wrong.

They are using their bodies for all the wrong reasons and that is just wrong. "Internationally, the real socialites are those from rich families, girls who can afford going to high-end parties and interact with the who's-who in the political and social arena using their family and hard earned cash.

Not the calibre of socialites we are seeing in Kenya," an irritated Saumu challenges. The humorous Saumu takes life with a light touch and she does not think the little drama that is sometimes displayed by her 'bling bling' dad is anything wrong.

She likes her father's sense of style and humour-filled character, something she is quickly borrowing from him.

"I think a little drama makes life more fun," she notes. "When people make fun of my father and all those photo-shopped photos with Shebesh, I really don't feel embarrassed.

She is a good woman and a great leader. She is a very successful business woman who is a no-nonsense lady despite the drama.

After all, drama is cool as long as it is not exaggerated," she defends.

The rather versatile girl would like to invest in local fashion industry to promote fashion in Kenya.

"I use my light to shine others just like my father," she concludes as she refers to the great charity and uplifting programmes her father has been doing.
