10,000 former officers to join war on crime

More than 10,000 retired police officers will offer security advice to supplement police operations, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku has said.

The CS said this would be done through the Nyumba Kumi and community policing programmes.

However, their engagement will be implemented in a structured framework to provide an interface at community and county levels as the Government grapples with spiralling insecurity.

“Retired police officers possess a pool of immense knowledge from their local and international training and years of practical experience that can supplement security efforts on a larger scale,” Mr Lenku said Tuesday.

He spoke after a delegation of National Association of Retired Police Officers (Narpo), led by former Director of Criminal Investigations Francis Sang, visited him in his office.

Dr Sang, who doubles up as a member of the National Task Force on Nyumba Kumi, will co-ordinate the merger of retired officers and the team. Lenku said they were working on various measures to ensure the incorporation of retired officers was smooth and did not cause any conflict.
