Potato friendly laws go to Senate

Potato growing counties have called on the Senate to pass a law that will protect marketing and processing of the produce to minimise widespread exploitation of farmers by middle men.

Nyandarua Governor Daniel Waithaka said leaders from 12 potato growing counties had already forwarded their proposals to the Senate's Agricultural committee and were awaiting the House to pass a new law.

He said the collaboration by Nakuru, Nyeri, Narok, Meru Uasin Gishu and Kiambu counties among others have conducted several meetings to formulate laws that will ensure potatoes are packaged in a 50-kg bag or per kilo and not the usual extended bags.

"This is a move that we have taken as potato growing counties to protect our farmers. We will not allow them to be exploited anymore," he said.
