Two die, three others hospitalised after consuming illicit brew in Nandi

Nandi, Kenya: Two people have died and three others hospitalised after consuming adulterated drinks in Kobujoi, Nandi County.

The victims, among them a student at an Institute in the area allegedly bought the killer drinks from a  house after spirits and wines outlets were closed within the county.

Nandi County Executive Commissioner in charge of Health, Mathew Kiprono Rotich said two out of the three survivors have complained of partial blindness.

“There are two cases of mortality and three still in hospital with two out of the three complaining of partial blindness,” Rotich said.

He added that he was saddened as a county government official because the tragedy happened after sensitization programme on killer brews.

He revealed that the county held a meeting with bar owners in the region and agreed to suspend wines and spirits until further notice after illicit brew claimed 15 lives in Uasin Gishu and Nandi Counties early this month.

“It is so unfortunate that our people do not listen to us even if it is for their own good. We have told them to stop using the banned spirits through all the mediums we had but they keep doing the opposite,” he said.
