Mothers told to shield girls from the 'cut'

Communities practising female genital mutilation (FGM), have been asked to shun the retrogressive culture, as it impedes girls reproductive health and contributes to poverty.

Anti-Female Genital Mutilation Board chairperson Linah Jebii Kilimo raised concern over the number of girls who have undergone the cut in Meru, and called for an end to the practice. Ms Kilimo said:

“We are distressed when we hear mothers are forcing their daughters to undergo the cut, yet they should be the ones protecting them from the harmful practice.”

Meru County Woman Rep Florence Kajuju lauded Kilimo’s efforts in the war against FGM. Igembe North Sub County Commissioner Benjamin Nzioka, said parents had been arrested for forcing their daughters to undergo the cut.
