5 things you need to know about Sergio Romero move to Manchester United

Sergio Romero has joined Manchester United on a free transfer after being released by Sampdoria.

The goalkeeper was brought in as back-up to David de Gea, with previous No 2 Victor Valdes set to leave the club.

However, should De Gea move to Real Madrid before the start of the season, he could well be in line for a starting berth when the Red Devils face Tottenham on the opening day of the Premier League season.

In that case, it's probably about time you got to know a bit about him...

1. He's a social media virgin

Here's a message for any United supporter clambering to follow Romero on Twitter: Don't bother.

The 28-year-old doesn't see the hassle with social media, be it Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Off the field he describes himself as "shy and reserved".

2. Argentina's most capped goalkeeper

With 64 caps to his name, Sergio Romero has made more appearances for Argentina than any other goalkeeper.

He overtook former record holder Ubaldi Fillol (58 caps) in a Copa America warm-up win over Bolivia in June.

3. He's married to a model

Romero is married to Argentine model Eliana Guercio.

The 37-year-old, nine years Romero's senior, married the goalkeeper in late 2008 after just seven months of dating and the pair now have two children togeher, Yazmin and Chloe.

Eliana, a model and actress, shot to prominence when she appeared fully naked during a show called “Más que diferente” in her home country.

4. Van Gaal "taught" him to stop penalties

Louis van Gaal gave Romero his break in the game by taking him to Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in 2007.

The pair worked together for two years there, before LvG's departure for Bayern Munich.

They met again when Van Gaal's Holland met Romero's Argentina in last summer's World Cup semi-final.

Romero was the hero in the penalty shoot-out, and Van Gaal joked: “I taught Romero to stop penalties, so that hurts."

5. He's nicknamed Chiquito

Despite being 6'3" in height, Romero carries the nickname "chiquito," which is Spanish for "tiny".

This is due to his brother Diego, who is a professional basketball player, towering above him at 6'11".
