Girl aged 12 who beat cancer kicked out of school for missing class during treatment

A 12-year-old girl who beat cancer has been kicked out of school for having too many days off during her treatment.

Rose McGrath was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2012.

She bravely fought against the illness, despite symptoms including nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

But this week, the promising pupil received a letter from St Joseph's Middle School in Michigan saying she had been dismissed.

Teachers at the private Catholic school blamed her low attendance record and poor academic performance, according to WWMT.

Education bosses said they made "so many accommodations."

The tearful teen said she didn't do anything wrong but teachers still kicked her out.

Her furious mother Barbara McGrath said: "It's not like she's out at the mall having fun, she's in her bed, sick with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain. She's not having fun, she's sick. She'd be at school if she could."

Father John Fleckenstein, with Battle Creek Area Catholic Schools, tried to explain the decision by saying it's the best for Rose.

He said: "These were extraordinary circumstances, but so many accommodations were made we felt eventually it became a point where we really had to help Rose, by being able to make sure that she was getting the assistance that she needed and to learn."

"The accommodations which were made were woefully inadequate for a child with such a serious diagnosis."

The McGrath family told CBS news they have filed a complaint with America's Office for Civil Rights.
