Breakthrough in Ebola treatment as first patient is cured

A female British Army medic who tested positive for Ebola has been released from hospital after being declared free of the deadly virus.

Anna Cross, 25, was the first person in the world to be given the experimental Ebola drug MIL 77.

Corporal Cross chose to be given the drug MIL 77 at the Royal Free Hospital.

She joined the Army Reserves in 2013 as a staff nurse and volunteered to help care for Ebola patients in the west African country, arriving there in February, the hospital said.

She was evacuated back to the UK in an RAF plane on March 12 after becoming the third Briton to test positive for Ebola.

Corporal Cross is the third UK worker with Ebola who has recovered at the London hospital.

Royal Free doctors said they were "absolutely thrilled" she has made a full recovery.

Corporal Cross told a press conference today that she had been cared for at the Royal Free by an "absolutely incredible bunch of clinicians

It comes as Hollywood star Orlando Bloom has called for continued support in Liberia after visiting as part of his work with UNICEF.

The actor is a Goodwill Ambassador for the charity and during a visit the African country - which has been hit by Ebola - he made a plea for the help needed.

He said: "Everyone I met was determined to beat Ebola so that they can resume their normal lives."
