TSC: 6,000 teachers to miss promotions

NAIROBI, KENYA: Only 4,855 teachers out of the 10,952 who were interviewed will be promoted this year, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has said.

This means over 6,000 teachers are set to miss out on the impending promotions. In a statement, TSC said successful teachers would be moving to job groups M and N.

TSC Secretary Gabriel Lengoiboni said 519 teachers have been promoted to senior graduate teachers (group M).

"...and 4,336 have been promoted to principal graduate positions (approved teacher II or job group N).

Mr Lengoiboni said the promoted teachers serve primary and secondary schools, adding that some also serve in teacher training colleges, special needs institutions, national polytechnics and at the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology.

"These promotions follow a rigorous interview process that started in the last quarter of 2013 and was concluded in March this year," said Lengoiboni.

He said the promotions would take effect on July 1, 2014. This means the adjusted payment for the promoted teachers will be backdated three months.

"Their salaries and allowances will be adjusted accordingly and accrued arrears paid," he said, adding that successful teachers would get their official communication as soon as the letters were processed.

He asked the teachers to be patient because "the exercise is likely to take some time before all the letters are issued".

Last month, TSC announced that 22,659 teachers would be promoted under the common cadre promotions.

Lengoiboni further announced that 7,577 teachers would be promoted after getting higher qualifications.

Of these, those with diplomas in job groups G to J were 4,288, while those in job groups H to J in the same category were 768.

Under the degrees category, Lengoiboni said teachers in job group G to K were 1,386.

Some 239 teachers will be promoted from job group H to K after getting degree qualifications.

Those to be moved from job group J to K under this category are 46.

Other categories of teachers being promoted are those who took teacher proficiency courses.

Lengoiboni said 5,262 teachers in this category would be promoted, adding that another 160 special case teachers would also be up for promotion.
