2,000 South Sudanese to sit KCPE

NAIROBI, KENYA: More than 2,000 candidates from South Sudan will write this year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

Statistics from the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) indicates that the national test will be administered to some 2,004 candidates from South Sudan.

Acting Knec Chief Executive Officer Joseph Kivilu said the candidates will sit the three-day exams in two centres – Kuda Model Primary School I and II.

"The first centre will have 1,507 candidates and the second one will have 497 candidates respectively," said Kivilu.

This is the biggest number of candidates from South Sudan that Knec has offered to examine since 2007.

They will be among the over 840,000 Kenyan candidates who will write this year's national examinations.

Last year, 839,759 pupils sat KCPE exam while more than 450,000 students wrote the Form Four test.

A rehearsal for the examination has been scheduled for November 11, 2014.

Mathematics and English papers will be written on the first day of the examinations that kick off on November 12, 2014.

Science and Kiswahili papers will be done on the second day.

Also to be written on day two is Kenyan sign language. Kivilu said this paper will only be done by candidates with hearing impairment.

The Sudanese candidates, just like their Kenyan counterparts, will also write the Social Studies and Religious Studies papers on the last day.

Kivilu said plans were in top gear to ensure all registered candidates write the examinations.

Kivilu said the Knec Act was still in force and warned candidates against cheating.

"We advise the candidates not to even attempt to access the real examination ahead of time as heavy penalties will be meted on them," he said.
