Bilingual teacher

Your school requires you study our country‘s official languages-English and Kiswahili. Some, however, go further to offer courses in Chinese, French, German, and Spanish among other foreign languages.

This is because languages offer several fulfilling career paths including teaching those particular languages.

Bilingual teachers carry out many of the traditional duties of teachers, including lesson plans and student performance evaluations.

Many teachers who specialise in teaching a foreign language to English-speaking students majored or minored in that language themselves. Others are native speakers with a strong grasp of the language‘s grammar fundamentals. In addition to language, these teachers have often studied the history and culture of the language‘s country of origin, which they typically include in their lessons.

For those who intend to specialise in French, Spanish, Italian and German courses, your are in luck as several universities in Kenya offer bachelor‘s and master‘s degree programs in bilingual and multilingual education. There are also other training programs designed for professionals with degrees in other areas who wish to transition to bilingual teaching careers.
You need to have scored at least a mean grade of C+ to allow you to study any of the languages mentioned above.

It helps if you have a passion for the language too, as this will help you go through the difficulties of having to learn new pronunciation the foreign language requires.

It‘s equally important to interact frequently with native speakers of the language to allow for practice in speaking and strengthening your ability to speak, read and write fluently.
