Wrangles delay roll-out of key county projects

Kakamega, Kenya: Constant wrangling in committees set up to spearhead special development projects in Kakamega County has stalled implementation.

A section of leaders from the county said most of the committees have been rocked by infighting over management of funds allocated to them for the projects, leading to delays in the launching of the projects.

Residents of Khwisero Sub-county, for instance, have to wait longer for the proposed Shirotsa Dairy Goat project to start after area MP Benjamin Andola disbanded the committee charged with implementing the initiative.

The MP claimed the committee had not even done the ground work for the project such as coming up with a budget and quotations despite having been in office for several months.

“The committee has not started the project and when you ask the members to explain what is happening, nobody is answerable. I have disbanded the committee so that residents can elect new representatives,” said Andola.

In Navakholo Sub-county, the construction of St Raphael Burangasi Secondary School has failed to take off over a stalemate over who – between the school principal and the chairman of the board of governors – should manage the Sh800,000 CDF cash set aside for the project.

Robert Bushuru, the ward representative for Bunyala West, said residents should focus on the long-term benefits that will accrue from the projects rather than short-term monetary gains.
