Swimming: Harunani, Muteti splash their way to victory

Sensational swimmer  Saahil Harunani (right) of Mombasa region set two records as the Brookside National Secondary Schools swimming championships  ended at Oshwal Academy, Nyali in Mombasa County yesterday.

Saahil registered the records in the boys 50m butterfly  clocking 28.17 to shatter the previous mark of  29.60  set by Karrjal Shah of previously Nairobi region in 1995.

The new record breaker was not satisfied going ahead to set another feat in boys 100m backstroke timing 1:04.56  to erase the previous record of 1:05.11 set by  Patel Chirag in 2012 in Kisumu.

In girls category, multiple girls national record holder Emily Muteti of Mombasa broke three  championship records.

She started her dream of breaking records with the girls 200m Individual Medley in a time of 2:40.45 to erase the previous record of 2:53.43 set by Nawab Rhea in 2012.

Emily  added another record in the 50 butterfly with a time of 33.16 erasing the earlier record of 34.47 set by Diana Josiah.                                 

 Emily completed her hat-trick in the 100m butterfly after she blew away the previous record of 1:18.52 set by Donde Debbze to register a new record of 1:09.59.

Metropolitan’s Kelly Aprobus took 26.20 seconds in boys 50m backstroke to set a new record after erasing previous record of 37.76 set by Stig Njiru  of  Nairobi in 2002. The overall title went to Metropolitan region with 317 points with Mombasa region claiming the second slot with seven points adrift.

Aberdare were third with 106 points while Nakuru, Nzoia, Lake and Northern followed in that order with 72, 71, 45 and 23.

In boys overall, Mombasa region won with 158 points with Metropolitan coming second with 157 points. Others were Aberdare (44), Nakuru (40), Lake (32) Nzoia (24) and Northern eight.

In girls overall, Metropolitan emerged victorious with 160 points and followed by Mombasa with 152 points. Aberdare were third with 62 points, Nakuru 31, Nzoia 28, Northern 15 while Lake trailed with 13 points.
