Great Rift 10-Aside Rugby Preview: Quick look at participating teams

Nairobi

The 25th edition of the Top Fry Great Rift 10-A-Side kicks off on Saturday 19 April 2014. 24 teams divided across six pools are in action in the cup competition. They will be reseeded at the close of business on Saturday with the top 8 making the cup quarter finals. This is a preview of the pools.

Pool A

Defending champions KCB have a relatively easy assignment on day one and barring complacency and incompetence, should easily dispatch of their opponents Egerton, Comras and Bungoma as they seek to enter the cup quarter finals with minimum exertion.

Pool B

It's a close call between last year's beaten finalists Mean Machine and Mwamba for cup quarter final qualification from this pool. Depending on how matters play out on Saturday, one of these teams top the pool and barring a major upset, the other will be left reaching for calculators, pondering their fate and praying that they are among the top eight sides, something that will book them a cup quarter final.

The other teams in this pool are Multimedia and KCA.

Pool C

Homeboyz RFC, cup semi finalists in 2013 are top seeds in this pool but face stiff competition from Western Bulls for pole position at the close of business. Masaku and University of Eldoret round up this pool.

Pool D

Now this is a close group. Resolution Impala Saracens and Strathmore Leos are two sides who have tasted Great Rift success in previous years and they find themselves locking horns for the direct cup quarter final berth. They should have little or no problems navigating past Kabras Sugar RFC and Moi University but will have to brace themselves for the possibility of mathematics at the close of Saturday's business.

Pool E

Lunch Bar Quins are top seeds here and can expect little or no opposition from Eldoret, Catholic and Stormers. They are odds-on favorites to top this pool en route to the cup quarters.

Pool F

Its been 20 years since hosts Top Fry Nakuru won their only Great Rift 10s title. They will again launch a bid to win this trophy but first have to sort out the little matter of emerging out of Pool F unscathed and top of the table so as to secure top berth. Blak Blad, Technical University of Kenya and Thika RFC are the other teams in this pool.
