Kanu strategising for 2017 elections, says Nick Salat

Kenya: Kanu is engaging in “quiet operations” to revamp itself as it strategises for the 2017 General Election.

Party Secretary General Nick Salat on Thursday said Kanu has been working on major programmes that will ensure compliance with the law and shape their approach to the next polls.

Salat said the party, which is currently in a post-election agreement with the ruling Jubilee alliance, is still open to ideas on how to approach the next elections.

“All options are open for us, but one thing is a fact, Kanu will play a key role in governance of Kenya beyond 2017. We will be at the centre of the country’s leadership, one way or another,” said Salat.

He said the party is now laying the foundation, including conducting membership registration and making preparations for party polls to be held later this year to set early structures for “take-off”.

“We are doing all these silently. But our silence should not be seen as though we are not planning anything, we are well focused on the next polls,” he said in an exclusive interview with The Standard.

The former Bomet MP said they will be fielding candidates in the impending Mathare and Bonchari by-elections, which he said will give the party indications on its popularity.

“We are disappointed at lack of a collective approach on the polls by parties under Jubilee, especially for the Bonchari elections where our candidate is strong,” he said.
