Senator calls for action on MPs out to form parties

Kisumu, Kenya: The Registrar of Political Parties has been told to crack the whip on MPs who have expressed interest in forming other parties.

Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang’ said the move by sitting MPs to form political parties contravenes the Political Parties Act.

Coast Members of Parliament recently expressed the desire to form their own political party ahead of the next General Election.

The legislators, during a thanksgiving ceremony for Kenya Ports Authority chairman Danson Mungatana, said their new party would advance the agenda of the coastal people and also increase their stakes in negotiating with other parties.

Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno’s bid to spearhead the formation of a new political outfit to rival former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Nyanza has also been met with sharp reactions in the region.

Resign

The current trend has driven a section of leaders to call for action against those violating the Political Parties Act.

Mr Kajwang urged the members to be courageous and resign from their parties and any other political or public office they held to chase their dreams.

He also called on the acting ODM party leader Anyang Nyongo to write to the Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndungu to bring to her attention ODM members who have violated the Act.

Kajwang, however, accused Ms Ndungu of not being keen on implementing critical sections of the Act, hence leading to ‘waywardness’ among the MPs.
