Shimba Hills Secondary School has officially appealed to the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) over its two-year ban by the Mombasa Regional Secondary Schools Sports Association.

The Mombasa body slapped the school together with Kaya Tiwi Secondary School also from Kwale County with a two-year ban from participating in any basketball activities on allegations of fielding non-eligible player.

However, Shimba Hills Secondary School Principal Salim Kitauro has written to KSSSA Patron Kinyua Kitauro to protest against the decision taken by the Mombasa Region body.

“We attended games clinics at Waa High School on January 3 and we were never informed of any amendments to the constitution.                                                        Shimba Hills has represented the country severally in the East and Central Africa school games and we know the rules and follow them to the letter,” said Kitauro.

In the letter also copied to the Mombasa Region officials and KSSSA Secretary General John Ngugi, Kitauro said the boy in question, Abdulrahman Abdul, did KCSE in 2012 at St Georges in Kilifi County but his parents saw the need for him to repeat in Form Three to improve on his performance.

He said the Matuga sub-country jury cleared his school after the issues was raised.

Flouted rules

“We were never told to have flouted the rules at the sub-county level and this gave us the strength to soldier on in the consecutive ball games,” added the principal.

“Mombasa region applied double standards in its judgment.

“School games should not be used to settle scores and ruin the life of innocent students,” added Kitauro.

“Let your office not deliberately malign the good name we have laboured to create in this institution as KSSSA stands for identifying, nurturing and promoting sporting talent in students and teachers,” added the principal.

He said the decision by the Mombasa Region was harsh, malicious, unwarranted and against the spirit of promoting sports at the school level.

St Georges of Kilifi County became the new champions after beating former champions Baptist High school of Mombasa 83-53.
