The stage is set for the Brookside National Secondary Schools Championships following conclusion of the Regional Games over the weekend.

In the Aberdares, Alliance defeated hosts Mang’u 7-0 in a tight rugby 15s final encounter to qualify for the National Championships to be held at Shanzu Teachers College in Mombasa starting April 12.

Wilson Mbugua crossed the line while Paul Mutune converted the try to hand Alliance a ticket to Shanzu.

In the semi-finals, Alliance humiliated Kamuiru 29-0 while Mang’u run over Kagumo 25-3 to reach the final.

Alliance defied a partisan cheering squad to dominate the proceedings only to lose clear cut opportunities.

In hockey (girls), former East African and National champions Kerugoya defeated rival Mary Hill 2-0 in final to retain the regional title and qualify for the nationals.

According to results released yesterday by Aberdares Secretary General Francis Wanjohi, Philip Samal of Karuri High scooped 5,831 points to win the decathlon event while heptathlon honours went to Margaret Nyairera of Tetu who managed 4,386 points.

In the boys’ category, Mang’u ensured that they did not miss on the train to Shanzu after they defeated Alliance 2-0 in a final encounter that was hotly contested.

Bag second ticket

Mang’u would then bag their second ticket to the nationals after they beat Kiambu 64-29 in the basketball boys’ final.

Loreto won the basketball girls’ ticket to the nationals after they defeated Kabare 50-32 in final.

Wanjohi said that the region looks forward to better performance in hockey and basketball.

“Kerugoya is determined to regain the hockey trophy they lost two years ago while Alliance is the team to watch in rugby,” he said.

In Garissa, Mandera Secondary School will represent the region in basketball (boys) while decathlon, heptathlon and cross country will feature a composite team.

According to immediate former Garissa Secretary General Abdikadir Bashir, their athletics team will be dominated by runners from Sheikh Ali School and Rhamu Boys.

Garissa has not entered teams in hockey thus giving hosts Mombasa an opportunity to enter two sides in both the boys’ and girls’ category in the discipline.

Four counties

Bashir said: “Hockey is not a common sport in our school but with time we will introduce it to our youths.”

Metropolitan is among the regions that have identified their teams for the National Championships. It is made up of four counties - Nairobi, Kajiado, Makueni and Machakos and will be represented by newcomers Arya Parklands and Upper Hill in basketball girls and boys.

St Joseph’s Kibwezi (hockey, girls) and Thomas Fish (boys) will represent the region. Arya and Fish are making their maiden appearance on the national stage. Upper Hill who hold the East African and National titles are regulars at the national games.—[email protected]
