Upcoming heavyweight sensation Joseph Odhiambo of Nairobi registered a 2-1 win over Antony Kimathi of the Kenya Police at the Boxing Association of Kenya (BAK) National Intermediate Championships finals at Ndenderu Boxing Hall, Limuru, at the weekend.

Kimathi was the first to grab the lead in the three- round bout but Odhiambo rose with a flurry of punches to turn tables in the second and last round.

“It’s a great honour for me to win this title, this means I am now qualified to participate in the Kenya Open and the BAK national leagues,” Odhiambo told FeverPitch after receiving his certificate from Commonwealth Sports Council Director, Reuben Ndolo, who graced the occasion.

However, Ben Omondi from Coast could not stop the heat generated by Nairobi’s Chrispin Murimi, who won in the welter weight category on knockout in the second round.

Another knockout was realised in the light weight category where Stephen Oduor from the Kenya Police sent Nairobi’s Fredrick Omondi to the canvas in the second round.

tightly contested

Joseph Nderitu (Police) edged Joseph Nguthiru (Central) 2-1 in a tightly contested light welter weight bout. A similar result was realised in bantam weight category where Moses Ngaruia from Central won 2-1 against Isaac Ochieng’ of Nairobi.

Kevin Murigi (Central)  dismissed James Karanja of Nairobi Metro 3-0 in the fly weight category.

Police’s Peter Kiarie also won 3-0 against Mohammed Hussein of Nairobi in light fly category.

special contest

Special contest pitting Ali Azizi of Nairobi against his region mate Yakubu Salim ended into a draw. Also junior contests involving Antony Mutua (Dallas) against James Mbugua (Central) and that of Benson Kyalo (Dallas) against Joseph Kamau (Nairobi) ended in draws.

Nairobi and Kenya Police tied on seven points on position one in the championships ranking.

Central was second with four points, Nairobi Metro were third with a point and Mombasa were fourth also with a point.

BAK officials Patrick ‘Mont’ Waweru and George ‘Foreman’ Onyango who supervised the bouts recommended the winners to participate in the forthcoming Kenya Open to be held at the end of the year.

While congratulating the winners of the championships, Ndolo advised the youth in Ndenderu to embrace boxing as it is a sport that promotes discipline.

He also congratulated first lady Margaret Kenyatta for showing the way on sports by embracing athletics.

Ndolo said other leaders should take the initiative to support and embrace sports, which has the potential to rejuvenate Kenya’s economy.

“I urge government officials not only to concentrate in athletics but also support other sports like boxing, handball, volleyball, badminton and squash among others,” said Ndolo.

Ndolo has called for fairness in selection of Team Kenya boxing squad to Common Wealth Games in Glascow, Scotland set for the Kaloleni Social Hall in Nairobi on April 10-12. —[email protected]
