Kenya terms US travel advisory unnecessary, calls for its withdrawal

Kenya has protested a recent travel advisory from the United States of America government cautioning its citizens from visiting Kenya.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it did not expect such an advisory from a friendly government.

“We wish to unequivocally condemn the re-issuing of the travel advisory, and reject it as unnecessary and uncalled for,” read the statement.

In its protest the Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave a reason that terrorism, such as the attack on Westgate Mall is a global problem which the United States and other nations have suffered from before.

“We have made these points clear to the United States government through the usual diplomatic channels.  Issuing travel advisories, such as this one, is not what we expect of our friends with whom we have enjoyed cordial diplomatic relations for a long time.” Said the ministry's statement.

Kenya is now calling on the US to withdraw the advisory.

In the advisory issued afresh on Friday, the United States warned its citizens against traveling to Kenya following the Westgate attack a week ago. The statement further alluded to imminent attacks saying, “the US government continues to receive information about potential terrorist threats aimed at US, Western and Kenyan interests in Kenya, including in the Nairobi area and in the coastal city of Mombasa.”
