Withheld pay for teachers hurts trade in towns

By Andrew Mibei

The decision by Government to withhold striking teachers’ salary has affected businesses in various towns.

In Bomet County, traders are praying for the best as teachers go without salaries. Majority of teachers in the county draw their salaries from Imarisha Sacco, formerly Kipsigis Teachers Sacco.

At the end of every month, there are usually long queues at the facility.  This has not happened this month.

When Education visited the teachers’ institution, the banking hall was deserted. Sacco’s branch manager Geoffrey Langat revealed that this is one of the oddest end months due to the missing money.

“Our hall is normally crowded at this time of the month but right now, we are doing little here,” Langat said.

The sacco has stopped giving members salary advances due to what the manager summed as ‘uncertainties caused by the on-going strike’. Majority of businesses in the town are feeling the heat arising from broke teachers. A trader selling clothes near the teachers’ sacco revealed he is barely selling his wares. Bars are recording low sales unlike in past months.
