Jumbo tramples seven-year-old boy to death

A seven-year-old boy has been trampled to death by an elephant at Ndonyo Wasin area in Samburu East.

According to Samburu National Reserve warden Jeremiah Kurgat, the minor was tending to his father’s cows when he was attacked by the jumbo.

“It is unfortunate and I urge all parents to ensure the safety of their children because at times wildlife stray from the park especially during the rainy season,” he said.

The boy’s father, Loitime Lesangukurikuri, said he went looking for his son when he failed to come back home at his usual time.

“I went looking for him only to come across his body badly trampled by an elephant,” he said.

Cases of deaths caused by wildlife in the area have been rampant. Six months ago a buffalo killed a man in the same area. Residents are now calling on the  Kenya Wildlife Service to control the wild animals encroaching on human settlement areas.
