Widow killed, man stoned to death in love gone sour

Angry residents stoned a 25-year-old man to death after he allegedly killed a widow he has been having an affair with in Busia County.

Jack Emuria is said to have hacked Helen Ajuma, 42, using an axe on Sunday night at Kakapel sub location of Teso North District following a disagreement.

Efforts by the assailant to flee after committing the murder proved futile, as he was pursued and cornered by a mob that lynched him.

Teso OCPD Elphas Korir condemned the incident, terming it a serious criminal offence.

He warned the public against taking the law in their hands and appealed to them to forward suspects to police for investigation to be carried out.

The OCPD further asked youths to desist from carrying on affairs with widows to avoid such incidents.

Area senior chief Vincent Etyang said he received a distress call from a resident at about midnight and he rushed to the scene.

On arrival, he found the woman had been hacked to death in her bed while the suspect had been lynched in the same compound.

“I suspect the duo had a disagreement over their affair that resulted in the deaths,” said Etyang.

The elder son of the deceased, Standard Eight pupil, said their mother came from the market that evening and prepared supper for them.

“Our mother prepared supper for us and I went to my house to sleep. Later at midnight, I heard my younger brother screaming and when I rushed there, I found my mother lying in a pool of blood on her bed,” said the boy.

Sneaked into house

Neighbours speculated Emuria might have sneaked into the woman’s house and hid under the bed while the family was still in the kitchen.

After hacking her with an axe, he tried to escape but was arrested by the public who frog-marched him to the woman’s compound and stoned him to death.

“When we caught him, he had bloodstains on his clothes and hands. That is when residents descended on him with crude weapons,” said Peter Emoit.

The mother of seven is said to have been carrying on a love affair with the man before their relationship went sour.

Her children said the man had issued death threats to their mother a week ago, which she ignored.
