Witness says Kabogo kicked, slapped Keino

By ISAIAH LUCHELI

The inquest into the death of university student Mercy Chepkosgei Keino was told how Juja MP William Kabogo beat her as she lay on a couch, bleeding.

The supervisor of the Wasini Luxury Apartments Charles Githinji demonstrated to the court how the legislator kicked and slapped Mercy for breaking picture frames, while her friends screamed and pleaded with Kabogo to stop.

The supervisor added that Mercy was bleeding on the mouth and crying.

Kabogo, added Githinji, took him to the bathroom where he claimed Mercy had banged her head on the wall occasioning the bleeding and there was a tissue paper with bloodstains.

Guard Oduori Juma, an employee of Radar Security who was on duty, corroborated some of the issues raised by the supervisor.

Githinji explained two bodyguards of the MP carried Mercy from the apartment where he was having drinks with three other girls.

“One of the bodyguards carried the girl’s upper part while the other held her legs and they descended the staircase from third floor apartment with her head first. She could not walk,” said Githinji.

He added the MP gave one of his security detail money between Sh1,000 and Sh2,000 to find a taxi for her.

When Kabogo arrived at the gate with the other girls as they were leaving, he inquired where Mercy had left for and his bodyguards informed him she had fled towards Waiyaki Way.

Asked by the State Counsel Michael Omwirera about what made him to go to the apartment where the MP was, Githinji explained he heard the sound of glass shuttering from Mnazi 6.

The apartment belonged to Dipul Shah, a friend of the Juja MP and he had on many occasions entered the room even in the absence of the owner. Shah has since vacated.

“I heard the sound of glass being smashed and what came to my mind was that the glass-paned bathroom had been smashed. I rushed to alert his bodyguards of the development. When we arrived Kabogo explained that Mercy had broken picture frames,” he added. Hearing continues tomorrow.

On Monday, a friend of the deceased, Scolasticah Namwai Khaemba, said Kabogo slapped Mercy on the face a couple of times after she got drunk. The late Mercy is said to have started breaking glasses and picture frames at the restaurant.

Namwai said Mercy was scared after the slaps.
