Raila opposes sackings over Asumbi fire

By Augustine Oduor

Prime Minister Raila Odinga has opposed the sacking of education officials in Homa Bay County following the Asumbi Girls’ Boarding Primary School fire tragedy.

He said the officials should remain in office until thorough investigation is conducted into the incident that left eight girls dead.

Raila’s remark contradicts Education minister Mutula Kilonzo’s, who said the Homa Bay County Director of Education and District Education Officer had been relieved of their duties.

The minister also said he had dissolved the Asumbi Girls’ Boarding Primary School board for conducting holiday tuition even after the ministry banned it.

But speaking on Tuesday  in his office after meeting European Union officials, Raila said there was no need to interdict the education officials.

“Let the status quo remain until we conclude investigation,” he said.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers also want the officials to remain in office.
