Residents of Thingithu estate in Nanyuki town woke up to rude shock on Sunday when they found dogs feasting on human bodies buried by the municipal council.

The bodies were interred in a shallow mass grave near in a cemetery, which had been closed after the council claimed there was no space and closed several years ago.

Emotions ran high as the ugly scene sparked fears of disease outbreak.

A resident who declined to be named said Nanyuki Municipal Council employees brought about 40 bodies on Saturday and buried them in a mass grave.

“They came with a tractor and dug a shallow grave and dragged the bodies into the pit, only for dogs to exhume them Sunday night,” said the resident.

Nanyuki Mayor Councillor Isaac Mathenge said the local authority has instituted investigations.

Health hazard

Mathenge added that he had ordered the council staff to rebury the bodies decently. Public health officers were, however, caught unawares by the incident.

“I have been instructed by my boss Mr Samson Marangu to enquire more about the incident,” said the officer.

Marangu had earlier on said he was not aware of the incident.

“I am liaising with the council chief officers for an action to be taken immediately. This is very wrong,” said Laikipia East District public health officer Mr Samson Marangu.
