Police are holding a Spanish national after he was found carrying more than 10 kilogrammes of cocaine valued at Sh41 million at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi.

The suspect identified as Fortmolla Pascual had landed at JKIA on Saturday evening with a luggage with the white powder stuffed inside when police detected him.

He had come from Sao Paolo, Brazil and it is not clear if his destination with his luggage was Nairobi. Airport police said they had tested and established the powder is cocaine. The suspect was expected in court on Monday.

Airport CID boss Joseph Ngisa said the suspect was arrested out of extra vigilance by detectives at JKIA.

The seizure is the highest to be made at the airport of late in the past year. Police say most traffickers are avoiding the airport due to their alertness.

More anti-narcotics detectives have been deployed to the airport and other entry points as part of efforts to address the menace.

The last haul to be seized in Kenya was the two ton one valued at more than Sh6 billion in 2004.
