Armed thugs riding motorcycles walked into Paramount Bank in Westlands Nairobi posing as customers before they carted away cash valued at over Sh 3 million in local and foreign currencies.

Nairobi Provincial Police boss Anthony Kibuchi confirmed the incident and said initial reports were fingering at an inside job.

“We have arrested two managers for questioning as we pursue the thugs who escaped on motorcycles with the loot,” Kibuchi said.

The robbery adds to statistics as Nairobi’s crime rate becomes worrying and comes hot on the heels of another robbery at Chase Bank last Sunday.

In the Chase Bank case, an unknown number of thugs broke into bank headquarters’ strong room and escaped with about Sh30 million.

The gang used a gas cylinder and welding machine to break through doors to the strong room where the cash in local and foreign currencies was stored.

Three guards who were on duty on Sunday night Chase bank when the incident happened are missing. Police said the guards belong to two security companies and their uniforms were found abandoned outside the bank offices along Riverside Drive.

Despite the strong room fitted with a smoke machine and detector and other security measures, no alarm was raised when the Chase Bank incident happened.

Managers there said they detected the theft Monday morning when they were opening for the day’s business.
