Rape victims appeal for medical help

Over 20 rape victims of the 2007 post-poll violence in Kisumu County have appealed to the Government to offer them medical support.

They also asked political leaders to concentrate in reconciling Kenyans instead of politicking ahead of elections.

They faulted political leaders for traversing the country in search of votes, saying Kenyans who suffered in the violence were still in pain and needed reconciliation.

Speaking to The Standard in Masogo village, Muhoroni District, the women said they needed advanced medical care they cannot afford.

“Even two months ago I went for treatment because of bleeding and pain in my abdomen. Sometimes I cannot even walk. I was raped by three men in Rift Valley,” said one victim.

She said most of them lost their husbands during the violence and starting a new life and educating children was difficult.

“My husband was slashed and succumbed to the injuries. Now I just stay at a trading centre. My children cannot go to school and I still don’t have a home,” she said. Joshua Abong’o of Jowuoth Self-Help Group said most of the victims have been psychologically affected and support was necessary.
