Museveni warns media against ‘biased’ political reporting

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has cautioned media organisations in the East African country that they risk losing their operation licenses if they continued with what he called biased political coverage.

Museveni who was issuing the State of Nations Address at Parliament on Thursday said that the continued one-sided media coverage, just like the opposition protests over the last one year was affecting the country's economic growth.

Museveni added that some of his political supporters told him that they have to pay the media to get favorable media coverage. "I will never give them that money. It is the duty of every media house, radio, and television or newspaper to ensure that they give balanced and objective coverage of any story," he said.

He said all political organisations and media houses in the country have a historic mission of promoting nationalism, Pan- Africanism and socioeconomic transformation. "It is a duty of every media house to further this aim. I hope they will listen to my advice," he said.

In recent months the government of Uganda has been at loggerheads with the media with some state institutions being accused of gagging the press. Uganda’s government has also accused the media of one-sided reporting especially regarding the opposition protests.
