A tight security blanket enveloped Nyayo Stadium Friday as the country marked the 49 Madaraka Day.
Security was tight at the venue and nothing was taken for granted in the face of the recent terror attacks in Nairobi and North Kenya that were blamed to the Al Qaeda linked terror group- Al Shabab.
Last Monday, suspected terrorist planted an IED bomb at a shopping mall along Moi Avenue in Nairobi killing one persons and leaving scores of traders and customers nursing injuries.
Anti-Terrorism Unit Police Officers are pursuing one of the suspects said to have slipped into the country from Somalia a few months ago.
Visitors Who streamed into the stadium were thoroughly frisked to ensure safety of Kenyans who attended the colorful celebrations.
Nobody was spared in this operation-even members of the fourth estate and dignitaries who attended the event that was presided over by President Mwai Kibaki.
Journalists were asked to unpack their bags, which were passed through a metal detector before being subjected to a thorough body search.
Women who tried to protest their bags being checked were politely reminded that it was for their own good.
"We are here to ensure that all of you are safe." said one officer.
Security was tight in and out of the stadium and each officer charged with the duty of ensuring safety for all who attended went through their duties with swift precision.
Police with sniffer dogs did a random checkup of the situation on the ground.
They moved from corner to corner strategically to ensure that nothing went wrong.
