Lions utility back Fabian Olando is hopeful he will have the one stroke of luck to keep his chase of both the top scorers’ title and help his team clinch a final berth in the Bamburi Rugby Super Series against champions Rhinos.
Olando leads the point scorers log having amassed 34 points from the three group stage games preceding today’s semi final. Playing in his third BRSS, the KCB back has accumulated 34 points coming off one try, seven conversions and five penalties.
Olando downplayed his top form that has seen him seize the scorers lead and instead propped up his team for their efforts to win the overall title.
“I contribute my current points to the team, who have shown that they truly want to win the title this year, as opposed to previous years where though we qualified for the top four we fell short of clinching the cup,” he said.
“I’m aiming for at least ten points per game in the next two weekends and hopefully I can finish the title with over 50 points. That, I believe, will be enough to win my team the cup and still maintain my record at the top.”
Olando is enjoying life after a niggling knee injury and can only see the sky as the limit.
“Last season I was not able to score as much because I wasn’t kicking well due to my knee injury,” he explained, “but now I have switched positions and have been handed the kicking duties, which is working well for me.”
Vincent Mose of the SDV Transami Cheetahs, who is placed second with 27 points coming off two tries, seven conversions and one penalty, trails Olando. Dimension Data Rwenzori’s Anthony Kinene comes in third on 24 points courtesy of six penalties and four conversions while Eden Agero (UAP Rhinos) and George Oduor (Mumias Sugar Buffaloes) are joint fourth on 21 points, both having slotted home six conversions and three penalties.
The tournament’s top try scorers Steve Ogwete (Dimension Data Rwenzori) and Bramwell Shikanda (Mumias Sugar Buffaloes) lie fifth on the overall points standings with 20 points coming off a tournament leading four tries.
