Hawker charged with Ngara attack

A miraa (khat) hawker has been charged with critically injuring six people in a grenade explosion at a church in Ngara, Nairobi, late last month.

Ibrahim Kibe, whom police claim is a member of the dreaded Al Shabaab organisation, was charged with seven counts of grievously harming people and engaging in criminal activity.

Kibe, 22, who said he is a miraa hawker at Ngara market, was arraigned before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Esther Maina a day after he was arrested in Nairobi.

He faced six counts of harming six people on April 29 during a Sunday service at God’s House of Miracle in Ngara. They are Ms Shalom Mulinge, Mr Stephen Mulinge, Mr Ezekiel Muthini, Ms Julia Njenga, Mr Joseph Mbogo and Mr Leonida Ndege.

One worshipper died and several others were seriously injured after a man hurled a grenade into the church.

Kibe, who stood composed as the charges were read out, was also accused of engaging in organised criminal activities by being a member of the Al Shabaab, an outlawed group in Kenya.

Soon after he had denied the charges, police superintendent Bridget Kanyai asked the court to set stringent bond terms for the accused, whose residence and place of work were still unknown.

The court released him on Sh500,000 bond with three sureties of similar amount.
